Geothermal renewable energy prospects of the African continent using GIS

Abstract Geothermal energy potential is identified through the deep investigation of geological, geothermal, and geophysical information over a small area; however, this task both expensive complex. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can integrate different types data (or thematic layers) large regions use them to identify zones high geothermal potential. In study, we GIS as tool construct first regional-scale map Africa from datasets. The key objective study estimate geothermally promising areas within by integrating geological layers (rock units faults), (heat flow derived aeromagnetic seismicity), (hot springs volcanoes) database. A weighted overlay technique environment applied these generate map. result shows 14 with favorability index. useful for targeting exploring new renewable sites reduce exploration costs pinpoint during preliminary studies.
